The starting point
What needed to change
Running a homecare service meant keeping care plans, staffing and daily checks in step as people’s needs changed. This account covers care, staff support and governance, with a separate recruitment process improvement within that former business.
Practical delivery
What I did
I managed day-to-day operations, budgeting and finances alongside technology and governance, with responsibility for 25+ frontline staff and six office staff. I oversaw training and worked with Care Coordinators on care-package reviews, client onboarding and staffing.
- I managed budgets and day-to-day operations for a CQC-regulated homecare provider.
- I reviewed care packages and clients’ experience of the service, recommended adjustments and assigned actions to Care Coordinators and the wider team.
- I designed and built a recruitment platform with digital forms, document collection and candidate administration.
- I trained managers and coordinators in scheduling systems and client onboarding.
- I maintained workforce policies, governance processes and staff support alongside care delivery.
Independent inspection
What CQC found in practice
Hygea’s January 2023 inspection rated the service Good overall and Outstanding for Responsive. Inspectors described consistent care teams, support for staff and systems that helped managers respond to changing needs.
Care built around the person
Small, consistent care teams, regular reviews and support shaped around people’s preferences, communication needs and personal goals.
Digital systems with oversight
Electronic medicine records alerted management to recording or administration issues, alongside staff training and regular competency checks.
Staff development and support
Staff received induction, shadowing, supervision and spot checks. CQC also recorded company sick pay introduced following staff feedback.
Learning and clear responsibilities
Inspectors found clear roles, reflective reviews after incidents and a culture where staff felt able to report concerns without blame.
Working with health professionals
The service worked with GPs, district nurses and hospital teams to coordinate support and respond to changing needs.
These findings describe Hygea’s service and team at the January 2023 inspection.

50%reduction in average hiring time
From 10 to five days, compared with the preceding six months’ recruitment records at Hygea.
I measured the change in average hiring time after introducing digital forms, document collection and candidate administration. This is an internal measure of that recruitment process during the period I ran the provider.
Applied today
What matters in practice
Clear responsibilities, realistic workloads and maintainable systems belong together. Improvements need an owner, a review point and time for staff to use them properly.
